What is the difference between a lab dip and a bulk dyeing batch?

A lab dip is a small sample dyed in the lab to match a buyer's target shade and approve the recipe before production. It confirms the colour is right, but not that the recipe will behave the same way at bulk volume, where mixing, heating, and timing all differ.

Why can't you just multiply the lab recipe by 1000 for a bulk batch?

Chemical dosage scales linearly, but physical behaviour doesn't. Heat transfer, mixing intensity, and liquor circulation all change disproportionately as vessel size increases, so a formulation can behave differently at scale even with mathematically identical proportions.

What is an intermediate trial?

An intermediate trial runs the formulation at a scale between the lab trial and the full bulk run, against your actual plant parameters, with success criteria defined in advance — so instability shows up before the full 1000kg batch, not during it.

Is there a safe scale-up ratio to test before going straight to bulk?

There's no universal ratio — it depends on your specific plant's equipment — which is exactly why an intermediate trial against real plant parameters, rather than a fixed multiplier, is the reliable way to de-risk a scale-up.
